Alf Gathercole represents the third floor of the rubber factory on the Accident Prevention Committee. He looks after the five and the two bowl callenders of Dept 331, now making anew type of six eyelet boot.
Gathercole has been at East Tilbury for seven years since the war and says his job on the Accident Prevention Committee is really too easy, “We don’t get many conveyor accidents these days,” he said, “but I am not interested in that so much as the prevention of accidents. Somehow it seems the Committee and its members are not well enough known in the factory. I feel that if we were better known people would come along to me and to the other Committee members with ideas for preventing accidents.”
