The judging of gardens on Bata Estate in the annual competition, which had to be postponed from last week owing to the rain and thunderstorms, was completed on Monday.

The winners are:-

Mr and Mrs J Dunn of 40 Queen Elizabeth Ave
Mr and Mrs J Thomson of 22 King George VI Ave
Mr and Mrs R Simpson of 42 King George VI Ave
Mr and Mrs G Williams of 20 King George VI Ave.

The prizes are four, three, two guineas and one guinea respectively. They will be presented at 10 o’clock during an interval of the carnival dance tomorrow night. Mrs Schmidt, promoter of the competition, will make the presentation.

Gardens were judged by Mrs Schmidt, Mr T W Westal (sporstmanager), Mr Tom Potter (professional gardener) and Mr E R Spackman of Bata Record.

Each gave points for gardens up to a maximum of a hundred, taking into consideration the flowers, lawns, tidiness and general layout. Mr Dunn, a builder, received a total of 399 points; Mr Thomson 378; Mr Simpson 372; Mr Williams 364.

Many other gardens had been carefully tended, but the four prizewinners were outstanding.
