Starting as a probationary manager, he lived at Wood Green and proved himself such a keen and energetic salesman that he was soon promoted to be a manager.
He was manager at the opening of the company’s stores at Sutton and Portsmouth, and after four years, had made such good progress that he was promoted district inspector for District 517.
As an inspector he paid a number of visits to East Tilbury but, after ten years, he returned to management in the London area, taking over the busy Barking store and then moving to Walthamstow for four years.
For years his wife worked with him as his senior saleswoman.
