Ernest Rumsey - 14 October 1938

Ernest R K Rumsey. then aged 23, began working with the Company as storekeeper in the oil stores on Jun 1, 1934, earning £2.10s a week. In just over a year he was promoted to buyer of sundries, including paper, stationery, eyelets, etc. Later he also took over the buying o cardboard for the boxmaking department. In 1937 there was another milestone in his life when he married Miss M K Clifton, who came from his home town in Northampton, and they made their home on the Bata Estate.
Mr Rumsey showed great interest in his work and , like all other good workers, was rewarded when he was ultimately promoted to group manger in the buying department in August 1938. Now at the age of 27 he controls a section that consists of one half of the buying department, his section tops the whole factory in the results table for the half year and Mr Rumsey can look forward to a continued prosperous career with the Company.
In the early days it was one of the many duties of Bata Record to print labels on the Dapag Wam machine. When Mr Rumsey came he took over this intricate work and forever earned the respect of Bata Record’s staff ...
