1st September 1939
At the age of eighteen, Harold Stephenson joined the Company soon after it started. His first job was learning waist lasting on Department 421 in the leather factory. When the new department 422 was started he wasw transferred to its lasting section where he was promoted to shareman.
Mr Stephenson remained on Department 422 for nearly four years during which time he was selected to be leather factory representative on the Management Advisory Committee and he was made firstman in January 1938.
In August, 1938, he was promoted to checker on Department 487 and after six months became foreman of the same department.
Together with the department's manager, Mr F Newman, it is Mr Stephenson's job to see that new workers in the leather factory are trained in the various operations so that ehey are efficient and capable when they are transferred to other departments.
Mr Stephenson attended the manager's luncheon conference as top foreman from the leather factory last week and has attended several times during the past half year.
