Mr Harry Gough first came to work for the company at the age of twenty-two as a trainee manager in the retail department. After a preliminary period at East Tilbury he took over the management of Brentwood shop where he stayed for nearly nine months.
His first promotion came at the end of 1935 when he became inspector of the Kent district, but after nine months, Mr Gough returned to East Tilbury as chief supplier.
He served one year in the supply department before he was transferred back to the sales section, this time as group inspector. After another year controlling the Kent and South London districts, Mr Gough's adaptability was tested again. This time he took over the duties of staff manager for the retail department.
Here his knowledge of the personel of the shops and the retail system served him in good stead until he went back to the shoe selling in September, 1938 when he returned to his old group 530 as group manager. Mr Gough is still with group 530 and it is due to his leadership that it is one of the best groups in the retail section.
