Robert Lay - 25 November 1938

Robert Henry Lay at the age of twenty-four, began with the Retail Department as foreman of the Refinishing workshop. during his six months in that position he gained considerable experience of the Bata system, stock-keeping and statements, etc.
In July, 1936 he was transferred to the Leather Factory as chief examiner. He controlled the quality of shoes despatched from the Leather Factory for nearly two yeas. During 1937 he became temporary foreman to Department 423. In the six weeks that Mr Lay took charge of this Department, he increased its profits and gained first prize in the foremen’s competition for the best-made pair of shoes.
He continued as chief examiner until August, 1938 when he was promoted to floor-manger of Departments 421/2/3/4.
Also notable amongst his conquests that which culminated in his marriage to Miss Isabel Thomas, formerly forewoman of Department 325 in the Rubber Factory. They live in Bata Avenue on the estate.
