
Aged nineteen, W Hammond began working in the supply department in October, 1934, as a production clerk, earning a salary of 32/6 a week.
In just over a year he has transferred to different jobs in the same department and gained a practical knowledge of the booking and routine of sending out large supplies of shoes to Bata retail shops. During 1935 he was promoted to manager of the supply department and during the same year also took charge of quantity department, dealing with the weekly production of the factory.
In 1936 he was ent to Zlin to see how the work was done out there and returned to Tilbury with a lot of new schemes to put into practice in the supply department.
At Christmas time just two years ago he married Miss P Human of Cambridge and came to live on Bata Estate in King George VI avenue. They now have a daughter.
At the end of 1937 Mr Hammond progressed still further up the ladder and became manager of the retail and export shoe stocks, and control of the despatching of all shoes that leave the factory.
In less than four years he has risen from clerk to manager. Mr Hammond has a substantial personal account and a motor-car.
