This weekend we unfold an unusual story of a man's career with the Company. Mr J Gaddes first came to East Tilbury in February, 1937 as chef in the Community House restaurant.
After nine months in the catering sections, he made up is mind that he would prefer shoemaking to cooking joints and he entered the factory, learning heel attaching in Department 487.
While on the school conveyor, he also learnt sole levelling and was soon transferred to Department 423. Within a few months he was appointed shareman and was later made firstman of the department.
His next move was back to the school, but this time he returned as an instructor in the finishing section. His capabilities soon marked him for another early promotion and he was made checker in Department 421. He remained there until the beginning of this half-year when he was selected to be foreman of Department 422.
Mr Gaddes' adaptability has earned him a very successful career since he joined the Company and we wish him the success he deserves in his present task.
