Mr W F Newman joined the Company in May, 1933, when he went to Zlin with several other young men to learn lasting. He returned to East Tilbury soon after the factory's inception and worked as waist-laster on Department 431. He soon gained considerable practical experience of most machines in the leather factory and was promoted to foreman in 1935. He made further progress during the same year when he was made chief foreman of the assembly departments.
After working a year in this position Mr Newman again visited Zlin in July, 1937, to gain more experience of administration. He returned to East Tilbury in September, 1938, to become floor manager in the leather factory.
Now he has an important task managing the school conveyor, Department 487. Mr Newman's new job is extremely important and essential to the leather factory. He must see that the new workers are fully trained and efficient in all respects before they are placed on the other department in the factory.
